When it comes to doing medical abortions, people do them for a multitude of reasons. It would be helpful to know the abortion laws in your country before proceeding to do one. Herbal abortions are extremely unsafe. I do not recommend them for any reason. Some people have made a case for herbal abortion citing it as a way for women to take control of their bodies. Research done on most of these herbs is next to little or none. Studies on abortifacient herbs are mostly surface studies on specific properties. Most of the information and educational advice here is anecdotal.

Blue and Black Cohosh

These plants are popular in Asia and Africa, They are cheap and grown in poor areas. They are known for having a horrible tase. These plants induce contractions in the uterus that expels or pushes out the fetus. They stimulate an increase in oxytocin production which in turn speeds up contractions. This causes a miscarriage. They are a popular herb for herbal abortion.

Dong Quai

This plant has been used for centuries in the treatment of menstrual cramps. It stimulates and increases the strength of uterine contractions. This plant can be taken in tea, or supplement capsules. Dong Quai can also be taken with blue or black cohosh. This makes it more effective.

Parsley

In a study, parsley was ingested and it triggered spontaneous abortion. Parsley in combination with fennel was shown to induce more severe uterine contractions.

Soak parsley in water with fennel for some hours and drink the water, Parsley contains a compound called apiol (an extract of parsley). This stimulates the uterine muscles. It is safe to cook but when taken as a tea or tincture can induce abortion. Apiol, when taken in high doses can cause liver and kidney damage.

Penny Royal

Penny Royal is a less known herb. It is mostly used as an ingredient in an all-natural animal flea collar. One tablespoon of pennyroyal essential oil can cause nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and liver and/or kidney failure. It is used in conjunction with mugwort, they stimulate blood flow to the uterus and promote menstruation.

As a medical doctor, I STRONGLY ADVISE AGAINST HAVING A HERBAL ABORTION. There are safer ways i.e., medical abortion. I would also like to add that little scientific research has been done on a lot of these herbs that induce miscarriage. Factors like dosage, duration, and mechanism of action are important in determining or measuring the efficacy of a drug.
