What Is Herbal Abortion
This is when a female takes herbs intending to terminate a pregnancy. Herbal Abortion has been a way for women to induce a miscarriage since ancient times. Before the advancement of modern medicine, Traditional herbalists used herbs and spices in the treatment of different ailments. Some were successful others were not. Herbal abortion remains an extremely unsafe way to induce a miscarriage. Here are some of the reasons why
- Dosage requirements may differ for women
- Lack of knowledge in using, and making an herbal concoction or tincture
- It could lead to uncontrolled bleeding
- Can cause severe liver and kidney damage.
- Allergic reactions to the herbs could occur.
What Is An Abortifacient
This is an agent (drugs or herbs) that can induce an abortion. They cause the uterus to contract and expel the fetus. Some of these herbs stimulate menstruation. An Emmenagogue is an herb that stimulates or increases blood flow to the uterus. Some herbs are both abortifacients and emmenagogues. These abortifacients are numerous and they are commonly used in herbal abortion.
Reasons Why Someone Would Want To Use Herbs To Induce Abortion
When it comes to doing medical abortions, people do them for a multitude of reasons. It would be helpful to know the abortion laws in your country before proceeding to do one. Herbal abortions are extremely unsafe. I do not recommend them for any reason. Some people have made a case for herbal abortion citing it as a way for women to take control of their bodies. For whatever reason, we must respect people’s decisions. Some of these reasons include
- Inaccessibility to abortion care
- Uncomfortable in medical settings (spiritually, emotionally, and physically)
- Receives less than optimal or compassionate care from healthcare officials at fertility centers
- Prefers holistic/alternative medicine for all her health needs
- Lack of exposure/education to other options
- Poor socioeconomic status
- No trust in white coat/orthodox medicine
6 Herbs That Naturally Cause Miscarriage
Research done on most of these herbs is next to little or none. Studies on abortifacient herbs are mostly surface studies on specific properties. Most of the information and educational advice here is anecdotal.
Blue and Black Cohosh
These plants are popular in Asia and Africa, They are cheap and grown in poor areas. They are known for having a horrible tase. These plants induce contractions in the uterus that expels or pushes out the fetus. They stimulate an increase in oxytocin production which in turn speeds up contractions. This causes a miscarriage. They are a popular herb for herbal abortion.
This plant has been used for centuries in the treatment of menstrual cramps. It stimulates and increases the strength of uterine contractions. This plant can be taken in tea, or supplement capsules. Dong Quai can also be taken with blue or black cohosh. This makes it more effective.
In a study, parsley was ingested and it triggered spontaneous abortion. Parsley in combination with fennel was shown to induce more severe uterine contractions.
Soak parsley in water with fennel for some hours and drink the water, Parsley contains a compound called apiol (an extract of parsley). This stimulates the uterine muscles. It is safe to cook but when taken as a tea or tincture can induce abortion. Apiol, when taken in high doses can cause liver and kidney damage.
Penny Royal is a less known herb. It is mostly used as an ingredient in an all-natural animal flea collar. One tablespoon of pennyroyal essential oil can cause nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and liver and/or kidney failure. It is used in conjunction with mugwort, they stimulate blood flow to the uterus and promote menstruation.
This is used as a food flavoring. When you first hear the name, it sounds like a spell from harry potter novels. It is a plant native to Europe, Asia, and Africa. Mugwort has been touted as a sedative, laxative, liver tonic, and as an emmenagogue. It is also used in treating irregular periods.
Cotton root bark
This plant was adopted as an abortifacient in 1800 by southern physicians in the USA. It was mostly used by black slaves who were raped by their masters. This rape sometimes resulted in unwanted pregnancies. It contains an agent called gossypol (this is also present in okra). Gossypol is known for its effects on female fertility. Gossypol inhibits progesterone causes an abortion
As a medical doctor, I STRONGLY ADVISE AGAINST HAVING A HERBAL ABORTION. There are safer ways i.e., medical abortion. I would also like to add that little scientific research has been done on a lot of these herbs that induce miscarriage. Factors like dosage, duration, and mechanism of action are important in determining or measuring the efficacy of a drug. However, please consult your doctor or a qualified midwife before you attempt anything for your reasons.
