The Vagina: What You Need to Know. (Updated)

What Is a Vagina?

The vagina is a muscular, flexible, and elastic canal that joins the uterus on the inside and the vulva on the outside. Normal pH levels of the vagina are between 3.8 to 5.0.

The External Part Of The Vagina

This consists of the vulva and is made up of

  • Labia: this means lip or lip-like in Greek. These are the folds or loose hanging fleshy skin around the vagina. It consists of Labia majora (outer lip) and labia minora (inner lip).
  • Clitoris: The tip is located at the top of the vulva and extends inside and down both sides of the vagina. It measures about 5 inches in length. It has a lot of nerve endings (over 8000).  The clitoris becomes swollen when stimulated.
  • Urethral opening: This is the hole where urine comes out from
  • Vaginal Opening: it is below the urethral opening. This is where babies come out from. It is also where menstrual blood escapes the body.

The Internal Parts Include

  • Vagina: This is the canal that connects the vulva with the cervix.
  • Cervix: This is directly between the vagina and uterus (womb). It measures about 2-3cm but expands and dilates during childbirth.

The hymen is a thin membrane that surrounds the opening to the vagina. Although hymens can range in shape and size, most are shaped like a half-moon. This shape allows menstrual blood to leave the vagina.

When someone first has intercourse or inserts something into the vagina, the hymen may tear. This can also happen during vigorous exercise.

Certain hymen shapes and types can interfere with menstrual flow, wearing tampons, or having intercourse. These include:

  • Imperforate hymen. An imperforate hymen completely covers the opening to the vagina, blocking the menstrual flow. It needs to be repaired with minor surgery.
  • Microperforate hymen. A microperforate hymen is a very thin membrane that almost completely covers the vaginal opening. Minor surgery is used to create a larger opening.
  • Septate hymen. The membrane of a septate hymen includes an extra band of tissue that creates two openings. It’s treated with minor surgery.

Conditions That Affect The Vagina

  • Bacterial vaginosis (BV): This is an imbalance in the pH of the vagina. It can be caused by douching or having sex with a new partner. It causes odor and discharge. The color of the discharge is usually gray.
  • Yeast Infection (also known as vaginal thrush): This occurs when there is a high growth of a type of yeast called Candida Albicans. It causes itching and swelling. The discharge is thick, white, and chunky. It looks like cottage cheese or grainy curd.
  • Trichomoniasis: This is a parasitic infection of the vagina by a parasite called trichomonas that can also be sexually transmitted. The discharge is usually thick, frothy, and yellow-green in color. It is accompanied by a fishy smell, swelling, and itching on and around the vagina.
  • Vaginismus: This is when a woman has involuntary spasms during sexual intercourse. Depending on the cause, it can be treated with therapy or drugs.
  • Vaginitis: This is the inflammation of the vagina. It can be caused by bacteria or vaginal yeast. The discharge is normally white or cream-colored.
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI): Numerous STIs can affect the vagina. Some of them are gonorrhea, genital herpes, chlamydia, etc. which could cause genital sores. The discharge is smelly and could be milkfish white, brown, or green…
  • Vaginal Prolapse: This is a rare occurrence. This happens when the vagina is overstretched or expands. Multiple Vagina deliveries and frequent pressure on the abdomen can increase the risk of vaginal prolapse.
  • Vaginal/ Cervical cancer: A rare occurrence but it is advised to go for a checkup if notice anything out of the ordinary.

 Common Symptoms Of Vagina Conditions

  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Itching
  • Change in color, amount, and smell of the discharge
  • Bleeding during or after sex
  • Dyspareunia (painful sex)

Vaginal Tests And Exams

  • Pelvic Exam: Using a speculum, the doctor can examine the vulva, vagina, and cervix.
  • High Vaginal Swab (HVS): This is when a swab stick is inserted to get a sample of the genital mucosa. This is done by the doctor or lab scientist with proper technique.
  • Papanicolaou smear (Pap smear): During a pelvic exam, the physician uses swab sticks to take swab samples from the vagina and cervix. Pap smear screens for vaginal and cervical cancer.
  • Colposcopy: The physician uses a machine called a colposcope to examine the vagina and cervix more closely.
  • Vaginal biopsy: In rare cases, a doctor may detect suspicious growth during the examination. A small piece of vaginal tissue will be harvested and sent for tests.

Vaginal Care To Reduce The Risks Of Vaginal Conditions

  • Avoid sharing underwear
  • Always change pads and tampons every 4 to 6 hrs.
  • Wear more cotton underwear
  • Avoid lycra, silk, or satin underwear.
  • Avoid douching: the vagina cleans itself naturally. Douching affects the normal ph balance of the vagina.
  • Get vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV) and hepatitis B.

What Are Probiotics

They are good bacteria that are introduced into the body and helps it to stay healthy. The good bacteria fight off the bad bacteria when you have too much of them. In a way it influences and strengthens your immune system. They can be found in yogurt and other fermented products, dietary supplements, and in some beauty products.

The most common type of bacteria present in probiotics is lactobacillus. This bacteria can also be found in the vagina (good bacteria). This is why you are educated against douching or using certain female hygiene products. It’s because they kill off the good bacteria (lactobacillus). In the case of recurrent vaginal infections, adding probiotics to your care routine will have great benefits.

Probiotics produced by the body reside in the

  • Mouth
  • Gut
  • Lungs
  • Urinary Tract
  • Vagina
  • Skin

Vagina Before and After Childbirth

A woman can expect a lot of changes to her vagina after childbirth, some of those changes include

  • Perineal Pain
  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Increase in width of the vagina due to childbirth ( the vagina may be elastic but it doesn’t necessarily snap back to its former size after childbirth.
  • Swollen breasts
  • Soreness in the perineum ( the space between the vagina and anus.

Vaginal Lubricants: Why You Need Them

What Is A Lubricant

A lubricant is a substance that helps to reduce friction between surfaces in mutual contact, which ultimately reduces the heat generated when the surfaces move. Basically, a lubricant reduces friction during sexual contact. Women tend to experience dryness during sex or sometimes are not wet enough. this can cause painful irritation when sliding in and sliding out. Even though the vagina is self-lubricating, sometimes it’s not enough.

Types Of Lubricants

Silicone Based Lubricants

Water-Based Lubricants

These are gels made from a water base and a cellulose or glycerin solution. Water-based lubricants work better with condoms because they do not degrade latex. They are also much easier to wash off after coitus. These lubricants dry off and are absorbed into the skin during sex, this is why you may have to apply more midway into sex. Since they are water-soluble they disperse easily in water. It is not good to be used in pools, saunas, and hot tubs. They are mostly hypoallergenic

CBD Lubricants (Both Oil-based and Water-based)

If you are looking to take your sexual intimacy to the next level, then this is the lubricant for you. I swear by this, my partner also swears by it. It gives you a completely new sensation. A CBD lubricant is an oil or water-based lubricant that is infused with CBD. CBD stands for cannabidiol. It is the part of the cannabis plant that is not psychoactive. It provides relief from anxiety, depression, and PTSD.

There are even CBD suppositories that help soothe menstrual pain. if you have a painful menstrual cycle, hemorrhoids, or sore anus, CBD suppositories can help relieve pain. Cannabidiol is currently being used in the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy in children. CBD lubricants encourage blood flow through absorption in the vaginal mucosa. This can help contribute to a mind-blowing sexual experience.

How To Use CBD Lubricants

The way you use CBD lubricants is a little different from your normal lubricants. CBD lubricants are essentially woman-centric. Before your naughty time with your partner, spray some of the lubricant on your fingers, insert your finger into your vagina and gently rub it in. You do this at least 10 to 15 mins before you have sex.

Why Do You Apply it This Way?

This is because CBD lubricants do not work immediately, it is absorbed by the vaginal mucosa, which enhances the delivery of the oil and its contents to spread vaginally. It promotes blood flow, eases anxiety, and puts you in a good mood. If you have painful intercourse, your partner is into rough or aggressive sex, or you just want to have a completely new, different, and exciting form of ecstatic orgasm, this may be the choice for you.
